At the CeBIT show in Germany, Samsung (http://www.samsung.com) unveiled the SCH-i310, the successor to its i300 Smartphone. Outwardly, the two devices are nearly identical. But the i310 is based on Windows Mobile 5 software and has an integrated, 8 GB micro hard drive built into it for storage of music, video, and other data. (The original i300 had a 3 GB drive, but a 4 GB version was also released.) The popularity of mobile music and video ensures that we'll be seeing more Windows Mobile devices with high-capacity micro hard drives.
The i310 supports GSM/GPRS networks and is EDGE capable. It has integrated Bluetooth that supports audio streaming, a 2 mega pixel flash camera, and a micro-SD expansion card slot. Samsung will also bundle document viewing software with the i310 and i320, for MS Office applications and Acrobat files.

Samsung new gps phone with nice navigator
Samsung just released the STT-D370, a new GPS navigator in Korea that is the first of its kind; it connects to cellphones via Bluetooth. Oh, and it has Transport Protocol Experts Group (TPEG) and terrestrial DMB, but those aren’t as important as hooking up with your cellphone, obviously. This is supposed to be great because it allows someone to make calls, receive calls, or send TXT messages without having to lay a hand on a cell phone. This is great and all, you know, not having to look at a cell phone while you’re driving and all, but wait, aren’t you now looking at a different screen to do the same function.
One cool program the navigator will have is a built-in 3D map, which shows the road in front of you and directions where to turn. This is amazing: now you can look at the road and a virtual image of the road at the same time. The STT-D370 also functions as, whadda ya know, a GPS navigator, which gives the driver an optimal route and updates every 5 minutes. Basically if you buy the STT-D370 by Samsung, you’ll be paying $600 for a pretty normal GPS navigator so you can look at a little bigger screen instead of your cell phone

slim Sony ericsson phone
The Sony Ericsson rumor mill has been churning things out at a wild rate in the last days and weeks, leading some (that some includes us) to speculate that a product launch (or two!) may be just around the corner. The latest fodder for our eyes to feast upon -- from left to right in the picture -- is the candybar codenamed "Nicole" and the slider called "Shinobu." The Shinobu is rumored to pack such niceties as HSDPA, 2.4 inch QVGA screen, 2 megapixel cam, and what appears to be a forward-facing camera into a svelte half-inch thick package. Nicole is touted to be the first handset under the Sony Ericsson / Sagem partnership and brings a 2 inch QCIF screen, 2 megapixel camera, and 3G (no word on flavor) also packed in a half-inch thin handset. Both pics smack of fan renders, so we will just have to cross our fingers and hope that Sony Ericsson spills the beans on these two in the near term.

Samsung Unveils Ultra-Thin Flip Phone
Samsung today took the wraps off their ultra-thin answer to the RAZR at a Korean wireless expo. The SCH-V740 is a 14.5 mm thick CDMA clamshell for the Korean market. The handset features Bluetooth, a 1.3 Megapixel camera and 176 x 220 internal screen. It also has advanced software features such as mp3 playback with play controls on the outside of the flip as well as file viewer software. The phone is expected to compete with the CDMA RAZR, which Motorola will launch in Korea next month.
O2 Ice 3G phone
O2 has this new O2 Ice 3G phone which is a slim candybar and white in color. The phone has a 1.3 Megapixel camera and a camera in the front for you to enjoy video calls, a 65k color LCD screen, MP3 player, Bluetooth and USB connectivities, 32Mb internal memory and a MicroSD slot.
The O2 Ice measures only 117×49x14mm and weighs just 93g. It costs at £99 on pre pay from O2UK.

Motorola Moto Q
Following up on the desired Razr, Motorola announced the "Moto Q" smart phone. The phone has obvious similarities to both the Blackberry models as well as the Palm Treo. Included in its stable of features are the usual yada yada--built-in PIM, Bluetooth, etc.

New Models of Blackberry Promise To Be Delicious
Research In Motion, or "RIM," the makers of the delicious Blackberry, have promised that the future editions of their delectable fruit-named gadget will have cameras, MP3 and video support, more memory and GPS mapping — making businessmen and casual users alike soak themselves in blackberry juice in eager anticipation.
James Balsillie, head of the Blackberry makers at RIM and a prominent member of "People With Silly Last Names Inc." has also promised a Wi-Fi enabled handset — allowing for quick and easy web surfing on the move, rather than the irritating mobile networks of today. RIM also hopes to release other mobile accessories, such as printers, barcode scanners, and "digital pen and paper" - all of which will be named after delicious fruits and vegetables (like the Carrot Scanner and the Kumquat Printer.)
The Blackberry — known for its usability, slick design, and general appeal to anyone from businessmen to people who fan themselves with money — is a hot commodity and a fantastic gadget. Its latest handset, the 7130g, was a step above its predecessor — with a slimmed down design and the fastest smartphone processor ever.
When will the new Blackberry’s be released? That has yet to be seen. But in the meantime, users my drool over their current products at the Blackberry website, while, perhaps — and this is just a suggestion — eating the actual fruit. You know, to really get a feel for things.
Ogo Messaging device
The Ogo messaging device is a strange little machine that uses mobile phone technology without actually being a mobile phone. Instead, it's designed to work as a text only device that lets you send Instant Messages, emails and text messages without including any voice capabilities. The intended market is the youth market, since they're the ones sending all the IMs and texts. The qwerty keyboard means you'll be able to knock out an awful lot of text at a reasonable rate, which should keep the service providers happy. There's no definite news on which companies will be carrying the handset, but it definitely looks set to appear on the UK market fairly soon. Pricing in America is currently $99 for the handset and $17.99 a month for the messaging plan.

Review: BlackBerry 7100v
The original BlackBerry had a pager-style design befitting its role as a corporate email tool. With an eye on consumers, Vodafone is offering the BlackBerry 7100v, which keeps the push email system but looks and feels like rival smartphones such as the Orange SPV E200.
The Qwerty keyboard has been jettisoned in favour of keys in which one button houses two letters. Users press the button and, in theory, the SureType predictive text system works out the words. However, the keyboard is slower than the original.
What’s good?
The 7100v, which costs from nothing to £82.50 plus monthly fee, boasts more storage (32MB), an effective web browser and is relatively easy to set up. It is a superb email device - especially for corporate customers who get messages forwarded the moment they hit the company server.
What’s bad?
However, it is hard to recommend to consumers, since messages are only forwarded every 15 minutes and there's no way of instantly accessing messages by pressing a receive button. The keyboard is also big drawback. The other Blackberry devices may not be the most attractive handsets around, but a major selling point was the ease with which you could compose emails on the qwerty keypads. The decision to double up the letters on each number keys makes typing far more confusing, and it is likely to reduce the 7100v’s popularity in the long run.
Do you need it?
You’re a lot less likely to reply to every email that gets sent your way on this model, which isn’t going to make Vodafone too happy. If you just want to check your emails on the road, it’s ideal, but those hoping to compose long messages on a regular basis will be disappointed.

Cool Cingular commercial… Too bad it’s for the BlackJack and not the BlackBerry Pearl
You would not believe the number of times that I have been asked over the passed couple of days if the the new Cingular BlackJack from Samsung is the new BlackBerry that takes pictures and plays MP3s that I have been talking about.
There is a really cool Cingular BlackJack commercial out that has people going to the stores. I wonder how many folks had BlackBerry Pearl on their shopping lists but left the store with a BlackJack? The commercial makes the device look pretty sweet.
Palm Announces the Treo 680
arlier today Palm announced the Treo 680, the first consumer oriented device from Palm that comes in 4 different colors; Graphite, Copper, Arctic, and Crimson.
The Treo 680 is a quad-band GSM device that will run the Palm OS and come with 64MB and a VGA digital camera. The Treo 680 will not come with Wi-Fi, however, aside from that looks to be fairly similar to the Treo 700p from what we can tell.
A carrier for the Palm Treo 680 has not been determined as of yet, however, EngadgetMobile thinks that it could be Cingular.
Cingular BlackJack: Nice phone with good quality 1.3 megapixel photos, videos
Courtesy of AT&T/Cingular, I've been testing a couple of cellular phones, including the Samsung BlackJack (see left). I like it. It's a thin, light, quad band, 3G (HSDPA) Windows Mobile 5 handset with a QWERTY keyboard, a 1.3 megapixel camera and video recording, nice screen, external (yea!) microSD slot and Bluetooth. It feels good in my hand and slips into my shirt pocket.
I know some people aren't fans of Windows Mobile and it can indeed take an extra keystroke or two to accomplish some actions compared to, say, the [aging] Palm OS. But Windows Mobile has come a long way since its initial bloated, buggy code.
But isn't that often the way with a lot of Microsoft software? And, I'm interested in testing the latest version: Windows Mobile 6.

New Nokia 6670 Announced
Nokia have announced a new addition to the Series 60 range, the 6670. Its another mageapixel cameraphone and is very sexy indeed. In fact it closely resembles the newish 7610. This release also brings with it some great new enhancments like the new Nokia Wireless Keyboard, the new Nokia Wireless GPS Module and the new Nokia Remote Camera.
The 6670 is expected to be released in early October 2004 and will retail at around 500 Euros. However knowing Nokia, the release dates are probably tentative at best and i wouldn't be surprised if we have to wait till December or even 2005 to see this phone in the shops.

LG announces 9400 with MediaFLO
Wait wait wait, LG, let's be sure we have this straight: you've gone ahead and distributed pictures of the rumored 9400 with your CES press kit, but you make positively no mention of it in your press release. Didn't something just like this happen at CTIA with the VX8600? Either you've truly mastered the fine art of brilliant viral marketing, or you've accidentally announced yet another critical phone in Verizon's lineup early. Our money's on the latter. Anyhoo, here's the 9400 finally in all its blur-free glory, finally ushering in the age of mobile TV stateside. Though it's not branded as a Verizon release, we know from our candid shots that it's due up as a launch device for the imminent unveiling of Big Red's MediaFLO network — possibly as soon as this afternoon at Verizon's press event. Pharos announces GPS Phone - last call
Pharos, another up and coming gadget company has taken the next step for its GPS device lineup by jumping into the phone space, and rebadging that ETEN device (you know, the much discussed X500 glofiish, aka OX500). Dubbed GPS Phone (we really think calling it The GPS Phone would be much more potent), it's got all the specs we knew this phone was packing, including: SiRFStarIII GPS receiver (duh) with Pharos Ostia nav software, quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE (sigh), WiFi, Bluetooth, a 2 megapixel camera, FM radio (o rly!), and a friggin fat $699 price tag. Now, we're not necessarily saying $700 for a GPS-equipped Pocket PC is too much, but we really do wish they could have shaved $5 off the top of that margin and dropped in a damned UMTS / HSDPA radio, you know? Ah well, SIM unlocked and yours come February.
Pantech prepping W51PT for KDDI au?
What's the point in putting together a keypad that offers no tactile feedback whatsoever if it ain't a touchscreen? Lucky customers on KDDI's Japanese au network appear poised to find out, thanks to the rumored W51PT from Pantech. The machine-translated details leave us with more questions than answers, but we guess the clamshell offers a 2.4-inch QVGA display, 2.1 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, a one-seg tuner, and support for LISMO (wireless music downloads) in a 132 gram, 11.9 millimeter thick package. Your choice of white or gold, but do us a favor and try the weird keypad before you buy, mkay?

Oooh, lookey! See that lil' orange splat on the left? With phones like the Samsung SYNC in Cingular's 3G arsenal, the V3xx won't be unique by the time it launches — and it certainly won't be the first bearing HSDPA — but hey, broadband data is still broadband data; we'll take what we can get and eat it up with grins on our faces. To be fair, with its meager 1.3 megapixel cam, the V3xx is a great choice for folks that want little more than a basic stylish (by 2004 standards) clamshell that can double as a rip-roarin' modem.
